Millions of Americans drive on city streets and highways everyday without any type of car insurance. Many people who choose to go without insurance do so because they believe they are excellent drivers who are in no way capable of being involved in a serious collision.
But no matter how brilliant and defensive of a driver you may be, the potential for collision is always there. Even if you don’t factor in the many, many hazards that exist everywhere you might travel on the road, you still have absolutely no control over other drivers. Other drivers are the biggest threat to you while on the road. While you may look both ways at intersections and obey every traffic rule ever created like they were written in stone, any number of drivers who do not abide by the same rules may run into your car at any moment.
Because of the constant threat that other drivers pose, automotive insurance is an incredibly important part of being a good driver. You need to protect both yourself and you have a responsibility to protect others on the road. But even if you still wish to resist getting comprehensive automotive insurance, which would cover any damage to your vehicle and to the other driver’s if the wreck was your fault, there is another reason that may change your mind. That reason is the law.
The Law and Liability Insurance
Not carrying up to date liability insurance can set you back a good deal of money and if you continue to drive without liability, you can go to jail. Driving without any form of insurance is a very serious matter. Most states require the following auto insurance:
- Bodily Injury Liability-this insurance will cover any injuries or deaths that may happen to the passengers or driver in the other car during a wreck. It will provide repayment for their medical bills. It is also extremely important to you if you are involved in a serious wreck that is deemed to be your fault in the event that the injured party sues you. This insurance will cover for a legal defense if a lawsuit is brought against you.
- Property Damage Liability-this insurance covers the damage to the other party’s vehicle during a crash.
